- Parent & Educator Information Session: Advocating for Your Gifted Child - October 21, 2010
Have you ever wondered about your rights as the parent of a gifted student? Join us for an interactive session as we discuss such questions as:
Who makes decisions about gifted students' experiences in school?
What do I need to learn to be the best advocate for my gifted student?
How can I work best with our school to support my child?
Who should I talk to when things aren't going so well?Date: Thursday, October 21
Time: 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Location: Duke TIP Center in downtown Durham (directions provided at registration)

ODYSSEY OF THE MIND INFORMATION SESSION
Location: DPS Staff Development Center (2107 Hillandale Road)
Durham PAGE and the DPS Department of Advanced Academics are pleased to offer an Odyssey of the Mind Information Session.
This event is designed to inform parents and students about Odyssey of the Mind (www.odysseyofthemind.com). The event is open to families with children K-12 (students are encouraged to attend!).
Event highlights:
- A brief presentation by the regional OM director
- Examples of OM projects
- Opportunity to speak with DPS parents and students who have participated in OMIf you are interested in Odyssey of the Mind for your child's school, do not miss this opportunity! One of the purposes of the information session is to generate excitement about the program and that parents will take the information and then advocate for an OM program at their schools.

2009-2010 School Year Events
- May 1, 2010 Enrichment Workshop: Chemistry with Dr. Lyle, Duke University Come learn about states of matter, endothermic reactions, and the nature of science in a real chemistry lab! The session for first- through third-graders is from 10:00- 11:30. The session for fourth- through eighth-graders is from 1:00-2:30. This event is free but restricted to current member families of Durham PAGE.
- May 6, 2010 4th Quarter Parent & Educator Seminar: Eight Great Tips for Parenting Gifted Children and High-End Learners, Linda Robinson, Director, CONNECTIONS-NC, Inc., CONsultants iN EduCaTIONal Services, Raleigh, NC. Ms. Robinson's s presentation will focus on what parents can do to maximize each child's full potential. Get answers to questions such as, Should I use the term "gifted" when referring to my child? Should I help with my child's homework? Should I praise my child for doing well?
- March 18, 2010: Third Quarter Parent & Educator Information Session:
"Gifted Children: Overexcitabilities, Intensities, and Vulnerabilities"
Dr. Courtright, Gifted Education Specialist at Duke TIP, will address the unique emotional characteristics of gifted children focusing on overexcitabilities, intensities, and vulnerabilities. - December 16, 2009: The State of Education in DPS and North Carolina.
State of AIG in North Carolina, presented by Sneha Shah-Coltrane, DPS Forest View Parent and NC Department of Public Instruction Consultant for AIG.
The discussion will include a review of the newly adopted NC AIG program standards and the upcoming local AIG plan submission process. - September 13, 2009: How to Advocate for Your Gifted Child
